Most building projects require a residential or commercial building permit. Other permits may be required as well, depending on the project. Generally, any type of structural work will require a building permit, although smaller-scale projects like residential cabinets, small sheds and trim will not (see a list of residential permit exceptions). Some projects will also require one or more trade permits (electrical, mechanical, plumbing or fire) even if a building permit is not required. Trade permits require a paper permit application. View our Forms Library for the forms, permit applications, and checklists you will need to complete your project.
